How to start blogging. 101.

by Christopher Prince Boucher

This is my memoir to blogging.

I love blogging.

It gives an opportunity for ideas to be expressed by everybody.  Blogging is generally thought of as what twitter is used for, however people are adapting at a much higher frequency in comparison to the 1st generation blogs.  Everyone assumed people were talking about what they were eating, how they were picking their nose, and simply ‘un-accredited’ information was posted on these blogs.

Perhaps the most famous blogger, Perez Hilton, paved the way for individuals to perceive the new TV spot.  Now such blogs like the Huffington Post or niche’d subjects like the SurvivorManual.com.  Whether you enjoy finding the hottest music on Hypem.com or being totally geek’d out at Mashable.com there is a blog that is targeted for you.  So here are some steps in taking your blog journey.

Blog list for inspiration

I am adding a step in here, which is to create your own Google Reader account.  This will enable a more efficient browsing experience so you do not have to remember all of your blogs + open excessive windows.  Then you need to start researching!  First, you can just google any keywords + blog or blogs.  If that does not please your sesnsations, then I would suggest visiting the following websites that filter blogs!

Sign-up on a blogging platform

There are several platforms available that enable an easy-to-use WYSIWYG editor.

In order, they are my favorite.  I prefer Wordpress because you can essentially customize whatever you feel is necessary.  A little bit of CSS / PHP will do the job for just about any type of website/blog you would prefer.  If you are looking for simplicity, then moveabletype & typepad are great alternatives.  I threw in Squarespace since there is NO programming whatsoever to customize the layout.  Any of these will get the job done and showcase your blogging abilities in NO time.

Start Typing!

This is usually the most lagged step of them all.  The only way to get better at writing is to write!  Most of my college papers were copy/pasted, so when I started there was a room full of excuses.  The more and more I wrote, the better I became.  I used these resources to help grow my abilities :)

Don’t mind them Haters!

No need to care about what anyone thinks.  This is a place that you write whatever you want and if you do not like it, then leave!  If you think no one is reading your blog, you are mostly right.  There are tons of blogs out there, however if you have something that someone likes, then you start there.  You keep writing and writing until you have people commenting.  Those people will start to be your best buds, especially when they are giving you feedback and when they are sharing your two cents.  When I write my article on how to get Social, I will make sure to share the link.

If I wouldn’t say it to a reporter, I wouldn’t say it on my blog.” — Jason Goldberger
